Last year we managed to see the release of next-gen consoles from Sony and Microsoft with the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S respectively. Many expected the systems to miss 2020 due to the ongoing COVID pandemic, but both companies pulled it off. As things stand we don’t know the numbers either, but it looks like they’ve done very well by all indications, and in the UK they’ve beaten their predecessors.
GamesIndustry’s Christopher Dring followed up on comments he made earlier about the Switch’s stellar UK sales for 2020. There he mentioned that he knows the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S are selling better than the launch of the PS4 and Xbox One in 2013. Unfortunately, no figures were given to directly compare.
It’s a pretty normal story for PS5, as its launch seems to be slightly up on PS4, and great news for Xbox Series X/S, as other European countries like France and Spain fell slightly for the Xbox brand. . However, it should be kept in mind that both platform holders have experienced stock issues due to the pandemic, so it is difficult to one way or another assess the circumstances.
More PS5 and Xbox Series consoles were sold compared to PS4 and Xbox One during the same period when they launched. It’s quite impressive. Also, the Xbox One and PS4 combined didn’t sell a few hundred million
